Website accessibility is important for ensuring everyone can use a site easily, including those with disabilities.
Astra Theme is committed to accessibility and offers tools to enhance user experience. Web accessibility or a11y is the inclusive practice we follow so there are no barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites by people with disabilities.
This article shows how you can improve your website’s navigation for people with visual impairments using Astra Theme’s accessibility controls.
Let’s begin.
You can find the settings underย Appearance > Customize > Global > Accessibility.
Accessibility Controls In Astra
Enable the Site Accessibility option to turn on accessibility features on your Astra website.
Once enabled, the following accessibility options will be visible to you:
Global Highlight Type: This lets you pick how things on your website are highlighted when you use the keyboard’s tab button to move around. It’s like choosing the style and color of a marker that highlights text.
Input Highlight Type: This is similar, but it’s just for when you’re typing something into a box, like a search bar or a form field. You can choose how those input fields are highlighted when moving between them with the keyboard’s tab button.
You can change the highlight type from dotted or dash for both cases.
Previewing your Changes
To test out these accessibility features, head to any website page. Press the “Tab” key on your keyboard to move through the site links and input fields.
Here’s a video on how it works:
In the video, you’ll notice that when we press the tab button, website navigation components like “Leave a comment” and “Tips” are highlighted in blue, while the email newsletter input field is highlighted in red.
That concludes our guide. If you find that these options don’t appear on your website, please reach out to us by leaving a comment. We’re here to assist you.
